Local high school runners shine at Missouri State Cross Country finals. Meadow Heights' Alexander Seigel leads with a 34th place finish, while Leopold's Elise VanderMierden impresses in the girls' race.

Several high school boys finished the cross country season in the Missouri High School Athletic Association’s State competition held Nov. 8 at Gans Creek Country Course in Columbia.

Meadow Heights had four boys in the Class 1 competition, while seniors from Leopold and Zalma also completed in the Class 1 final.

The Panthers’ top finisher was Alexander Seigel (18:04.8, 34th), and his teammates who finished were freshman Austin Umfleet (19:02.4, 75th), freshman Jamey Golden (19:32.5, 99th) and Kamden Hays (22:31.3, 166th).

Leopold senior Josh Horrell was 110th (19:50.8) while Zalma senior Nate Borders was 128th (20:21.2).

Girls results

Leopold junior Elise VanderMierden was 39th (18:20.6) in the girls’ race, which had 153 finishers.
