Woodland boys' track team clinches Class 2 District 1 championship, edging out Charleston. Key performances include VanGennip's long jump win and Layton brothers' dominance in distance events

The Woodland boys' track and field team won the Class 2 District 1 championship on Saturday, May 6, in Scott City. The Cardinals (124) edged Charleston (119) by five points. The top four finishers advance to the sectional round.

The Woodland 4 x 800m relay team finished in second place. Lane VanGennip took the district championship in the boys' long jump (20-04.50), and finished second in the boys' javelin (155-04.00). He also advanced to sectionals in the 100m (11.32) and 200m (23.23). Reed and Calvin Layton finished first and second in both the 1600m and 3200m.

Host Scott City sent all four relay teams to sectionals. The Venable brothers of Chase and Gavin competed in track together for the first time and both will be running together in separate relays. Chase, a senior, anchored the 4x200 while Gavin, a junior, started the 4x100. Austin Lynn advanced in the javelin and Dillon Donley advanced in the discus with third place finishes.
